A Freaking Flock of Sheep
The second part of Bowen theory is that there are two key variables that explain why we react the way we do when relationships get stressy: “In any emotional system, human behaviour is impacted by these two things: the level of anxiety in the system and the level of differentiation of self.” The more stress or tension in the relational system the more reactive and less thoughtful people get. However, we can grow our capacity to respond to these pressures with calm and clarity - and this helps us connect in healthier ways with others.

Swimming in the Same Pool
Bowen theory is based on one basic assumption: “We are all part of emotional systems that influence our behaviour”. We're all swimming in the same pool. As we splash around it creates emotional ripples - or sometimes waves - that buffet other people. And their reactions create more waves which buffet us. ie. everyone is affected by - and contributes to - the emotional push and pull of relationships. You can’t understand human behaviour unless you understand this.
